Project Runway Season Three: Episode Eleven Recap - 9/28/06

The designers are feeling the pressure as they gear up for another challenge. They know that this one will eliminate one designer, and the other three will be headed to Fashion Week.  Right away we see some footage of Uli, which has me nervous. Usually we don't see much of Uli.  I figure that this means she's either going to be eliminated or that she'll win this challenge - it has to be one or the other.

Jeffrey gives brief summaries of the other designers' styles.  He calls Laura's style "Mothballs and Chicken Soup," no doubt referring to her more "mature" style.

I'm not sure why Jeffrey thinks Laura's style is so "old."  I mean, would your granny go around wearing lovely cocktail dresses with her glamorous sternum exposed?

"Don't get fresh with me, my boy, or I'll have to show you my sternum!"

Meanwhile, Michael is busy doing his mind over matter mojo. He says, "Words have power so, yes, I will be at Bryant Park."

I'm giving Michael one Mystic Point for continuing to work with the Force.  He's a Mystic in the making.

"Use the Force, Michael. It will never let you down."

Heidi tells the designers that they will be going to Elle Magazine's headquarters the next morning to meet with Nina Garcia, who will give them their next challenge.

Meanwhile, there are models to sort through. Since three designers went home last time, three models need to go. Heidi lets Laura pick first since she won the last challenge. She sticks with Camilla.

Heidi draws the other designers' names out of a bag.  Uli gets to pick next. She steals Nazri!  Omigod! This is the biggest upset since Zulema stole Nick's model last season!  Nazri belonged with Michael!

Michael gives her a look and says "I'm going to kill you." But Uli is resolved. She confesses to the camera with evil German glee, "I just went for her!"  And she talks about how she wants to use everything at her disposal to help her stay in the competition.

I'm giving Uli one Mystic Point for model stealing. She's one smart cookie.

Or maybe she's more of a krapfen.  That's a tasty German pastry.

"My name is Uli."

Michael chooses Clarissa and Jeffrey stays with Marilinda. Uli tells her prior model, Lindsay, that she's sorry, but you know she isn't really. She has Nazri!  Ha ha ha ha ha!  (Insert evil laugh here.)

Lindsay, Amanda of the red hair, and Javi have to go home.

The next day the designers head over to Elle. The offices at Elle are all white and shiny. Nina gives them a lecture about designing with an editorial focus. She encourages them to express a really strong point of view with their next design.

Their challenge is to create an outfit of their choice - they'll have complete creative freedom with this one. And they will need to make sure that the outfit reflects their unique points of view.  She also gives them blank sheets where they will jot down three words to describe their vision, and the words will have to mesh with their final design.

Back at Parsons Tim gives them half an hour to sketch, $250 for their budget, and two days to work on the challenge.

Jeffrey is determined to go in a different direction. They've seen his edgy look, but he says he's also a romantic guy, too. So he's focusing on a garment that says romance. He says he is designing something in red, white and blue, and I think, "Aha! He's going for the Republican vote! There must be secret Republicans on the judging panel."

"Where are those secret Republicans? We must impress them with our patriotism, um, romanticism!"

Fortunately, his design doesn't end up looking like that at all. Whew!

Michael is having a brain freeze and can't come up with a design for a while. Uli is also stuck and decides to wait until she sees the fabrics at Mood. Laura is choosing not to go too far outside her usual style vernacular. She plans to make something wonderful that is still her.

After their trip to Mood, they get busy working.

Uli isn't happy with the "kitchen dress" look she's coming up with on the dress form. She asks Jeffrey to model it for her and Jeffrey, who has to be comfortable with his femininity if he works in the gay-dominated fashion industry, gamefully puts it one.  He looks like a deranged hippie in a psychedelic apron.  After seeing Jeffrey in her dress, Uli realizes she needs to rethink her design.

Michael is putting together an evening gown with pretty weaving over the midsection.  The sketch looks great, and Michael is feeling confident now.

Tim comes in to check on everyone and reminds everyone not to bore Nina. Maybe the designers need to come up with a song and dance act for their models to perform just in case the dresses fail to impress. It's always good to have backup.

"You've gotta have heart - miles and miles of heart!"

Cut to commercial break where we see a preview for next week's reunion show (which I won't be recapping, but it looks like fun.) As usual, the reunion show gives each designer a chance to bitch about the others. And Keith Michael, the ousted designer, is there - and he doesn't look happy. And there are some excerpts of Vincent calling somebody's work "amateur," and Michael and Robert arguing back with him, so that looks like fun.

We also see Kara Janx and her ad for Saturn again. She's wearing one of her distinctive kimono dresses. Did you know that she has sold some 5000 of those dresses since being on last season's show?  Good for her!

It's the next day and the designers head back to Parsons. Uli is hoping that magical elves came along and finished her dress, but they must have been on a union strike or something, because it still isn't done.

Tim comes in with an announcement. The winner of this challenge will have their dress featured on the First Look page in Elle Magazine, which is very exciting, I guess.  I was hoping he'd pull out an Iman or someone as a celebrity judge, but the First Look page is all they get this time.

He also pulls a surprise on them. He tells them that at 5pm their models will be coming in and they will need to take them out on the street and photograph them. They will choose one photo that best represents their style as a designer, and the mood of the dress, and put that on their sheets with the three words that describe their design aesthetic.

This cuts their work time in half for the day, which kind of sucks. Michael is bummed because he's hand stitching tons of burgundy strips of satin for his dress, and he'll be rushed now.

The models come in and they rush off with the designers to have their photos taken in different settings. Michael takes his model back to the Atlas Apartments to photograph her in the stylish lounge.  The photos look sleek and sexy and the dress looks good in these shots.

Jeffrey drags his girl out to Central Park and forces her to stand out in nature. And he also throws her in a horse carriage for a demure looking shot.

Laura also tries to shoot her model at Atlas, but her idea of having the model come out of the elevator door doesn't work because she keeps getting crushed in the elevator door. So she switches to photographing her outside hailing a cab.

Uli takes Nazri over to where there are lots of billboards and lights and street musicians and has her party it up, which is Uli's whole aesthetic and which compliments her funky blue dress.

Back at Parson's Uli voices concerns that Michael's dress is very "1-800" phone line, but she really means "1-900" line as in "come up and see me" sex hotline.  But he said he was going for sleek and sexy with his design, so what's she bitching about?

Michael's design looks nothing like this

The next morning they prepare for the runway show. Tim comes in and tells them how proud he is of all of them, reminds them that this is their last challenge together.

The judges for this challenge are Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, Heidi Klum and guest judge Teri Agins, who apparently is the lead fashion writer for The Wall Street Journal.

What? The Wall Street Journal has a fashion writer? Why? Do all of those financier types need expert advice on which blue suit to wear?

I'm not convinced that Teri should be judging anything, based on her job title. But, anyway.

It's time for the runway.

Uli's dress

Michael's dress

Jeffrey's dress - very Pride and Prejudice with the pantaloon skirt

Oh, poop - I can't grab the image for Laura's dress off the runway section at Bravo. This photo doesn't do it justice. It was a cocktail length, pale pink, hand beaded vision in loveliness.

Of them all, I liked Uli's and Laura's the best. Both were lovely dresses for different moods.

The judges are picky and critical because this is the final challenge. Nina wants to see more of a "surprise" from Laura. Michael Kors says her dress is chic but that he wants to see her broaden what she's doing.  Teri says it is commercial and she likes it but "We've seen it before."

The judges' take on Michaels' dress does not mesh with his own opinion about it. Michael had said earlier, "I even made a white girl have some ass. That's how sexy my dress is!" And Clarissa does look hot in his dress.

But the judges don't like the open front and find the dress dull.

Everybody loves Uli. They really like the different silhouette that she used and the subtle slit down the front and the high neck.  Personally, I think it's just Nazri working her magic. That's why they don't love Michael's dress. Nazri isn't in it!

Jeffrey's dress isn't a winner, either. Heidi finds it very "milkmaid," which is better than Minnie Mouse, but not by much. They had been expecting something edgy and he tries to explain that he can also do romantic and that's what he wanted to show them, but they're not buying it.

The judges confer privately and agree that it's a tough decision to eliminate someone because they all have such a strong point of view. And they're all talented. Heidi says she would wear everything that Laura has made, for instance.  Michael agrees that Laura is good but he has fears of seeing an entire collection from her at Fashion Week with exposed sternums

"Ahh! Not another exposed sternum!"

The designers are called back in. One of them will be going home.

Or will they?

Uli is the winner for this challenge. That's great. I love Uli and I'm glad she won another challenge. This means she's definitely going to Fashion Week.

Laura is next. The judges tell her that she's in.

Now it's down to Michael and Jeffrey. At this point, I'm like, "No, no!" Jeffrey has grown on me. I don't think either of them should go home.

And guess what? The judges must be reading the mystic vibes I am telepathically sending them through the television. They agree with me.

Nobody is going home!  All four of them get to present collections at Fashion Week, and all four of them are still in the competition!

Backstage everyone is happy and bouncing around and hugging each other.  I'm bouncing with them. This is good.  I'll be excited to see their collections at Fashion Week.

Tim Gunn comes out, emotional and beaming. He's so happy that none of them have to go home. He dreaded having to tell one of them to pack up their things.

So it's on to Fashion Week for all of them! Congratulations to all four designers!

That's it for this week!
