Namaskar is the screen name for one of my favorite writers at RumorMillNews.com. A recent article by this author raises some good points about cultural figures like the wizard from The Wizard of Oz and the boy wizard Harry Potter.

While many people object to these stories because they are tales of magic and they are filled with occult symbols, these largely well-intentioned folks who want to protect their children from these symbols are forgetting an important fact. Powerful esoteric symbols like the pentagram and the equal-sized Celtic cross were used by the GOOD guys long before they were co-opted by satanic types.

Just because these sacred forms have been distorted over the years by the practitioners of the dark arts (I mean the real ones; and there are a LOT of these shadowy practitioners) doesn't mean that these symbols are in themselves evil. In fact, they are all extremely sacred symbols.

Teach Children Spiritual Street Smarts

When movies or books come along featuring wizards or witches and parents object to these stories, instead of just forbidding this material and telling their kids they mustn't be exposed to it, they should take some time to research the sacred symbols, colors, and traditions embedded within religious tradition and show them the GOOD side of these powerful things.

Most people sit in church, for instance, completely clueless about all of the occult ritual that is being performed in front of them. They don't understand the sacred traditions and energy keys within the ritual of Communion. They don't realize that the Lord's Prayer is a magical incantation that was originally designed to open up all the energy chakras in the body and help a person to unite with the Creator's energy. If you say those holy words while engaged in a very specific meditation, focusing on opening up your energy centers, you can use this powerful prayer to clear yourself of negativity and realign yourself with God/Goddess/Great Spirit. That was its original purpose, long obscured by generation upon generation of priests and ministers who have neglected to pass this information along. Heck, these days, most of them don't even know it themselves.

Everything within modern religion operates along the lines of that old "Whisper down the lane" game. Remember that one? One person whispers something to their neighbor, that person repeats what they've heard to their neighbor, and so on. By the time the last person in line receives the information, pieces of it are missing, words are distorted, and the original meaning of the phrase is often lost. Today's priests and ministers operate on the same principle. They're just mindlessly passing along what has been "whispered down" to them, paying no heed to the distortions and inaccuracies they are passing along to their congregations.

Occult Means Hidden, Not Satanic

By the way, the word "occult" means "hidden" and is not to be confused with "satanic." All of the world's religions have long had an "exoteric," publicly shared aspect, as well as an "esoteric" side which was only taught to initiates. Esoteric studies involve the use of occult symbols, rituals, and energy keys. Occult doesn't mean "bad." It refers to something special, powerful, and potentially dangerous if put into the wrong hands.

Parents should do a little research into metaphysics. Then they could present the REAL MAGIC, the good kind, to their kids and captivate their interest with something positive so they don't get hooked on the negative stuff.

Banning something just gives it power and causes kids to become fascinated by it. I've witnessed so many hard-core, fundamentalist Christian kids "fall" BIG TIME when they hit college or were exposed to their "normal" peers for the first time. This is the fate that awaits today's home-schooled children. They need more tools to understand the "other" culture that exists outside their rigid and repressed little reality, so they can maneuver through it one day with wisdom.

Repression isn't good. But parents can guide their children about using spiritual and personal energy in a good way IF THEY BOTHER TO LEARN HOW TO DO THIS THEMSELVES. Teach their children to be discerning and knowledgeable - that's what is required if they truly wish their kids to maintain spiritual clarity on their path.

Don't Teach Your Child to Fear the World; Teach Her to Navigate Through It Wisely

It's important to be taught some metaphysical "street smarts" so you can see what both the "good" and the "bad" guys are doing. But few parents bother to learn this stuff themselves, let alone pass this important knowledge along to their children so they can be spiritually empowered.

Anyway, Namaskar makes a great case in this short essay for the merits of reclaiming our "lost" occult symbols, rituals, and teachings which were first used by those of the Light but popularized by many who embrace the Dark.

Just remember: we had them first. And there are still many guardians of this sacred knowledge who are reclaiming these various tools, symbols, and rituals and restoring them to full spiritual majesty.
