Q: What first inspired you to become a jewelry designer, David? Were you always an artist, and how did you learn how to do what you do?
A: My main influence came to me from nature itself. As a child I use to hang out at my grandparents’. My grandfather was an agriculture specialist who worked for the UN helping Third World countries to develop better agriculture and fight hunger. He had a great garden next to his house, and I used to spend many hours watching the different plants, trees and insects. The animal and plants' designs inspired me. At a young age I thought of becoming a zoology expert. I remember lying on the grass for an afternoon nap and all the neighborhood dogs coming to join me. (Today I have three dogs and two cats).
During one of my visits I found a book about ancient cultures. The first page was about Troy. There were great images of the royal jewelry artwork that captured my heart. I then had a glimpse of understanding that I would incorporate both nature and ancient art together, and you can certainly say that is what I’m doing today.
I learned the jewelry techniques from a friend named Yaniv Shapira and another extraordinary artist by the name Michel Ardi. The designs are taken from the geometry/mathematics of creation itself. Other strong influences are Judaism, Kabbalah, the Emerald tablet of Thoth, Buddhism, music (I play the guitar) and the desire to help others.
Q: It seems like you’ve drawn your inspiration from many wonderful sources. You know, I've always believed in the idea “Do what you love and the money will follow." Do you enjoy doing work that brings beauty and healing into people's lives?
A: I know for sure that true happiness is all about bringing happiness to other people. This is why I like what I’m doing so much. The comments I receive from all over the world give me great joy, and I'm always grateful for the feedback.
Q: The sacred geometry that you use to create your jewelry is wonderful. You work with ancient shapes like the Tree of Life, the Merkaba, the Flower of Life and others. Magicians and sages throughout the centuries have used these shapes for healing, prayer, and meditation. I've found that simply gazing on these symbols has a healing effect. And I've personally worked with meditations based on the Tree of Life, the Flower of Life, and the Merkaba and found that these enhanced my psychic abilities. Have people reported any interesting effects after wearing your jewelry?
A: Yes. Here are a few stories that demonstrate the comments that I receive:
My friend's romantic partner called me one day and asked if she could stop by my workshop. Every time I make a new model, I usually give it as a gift, and I had just made the Genesa Crystal model. I decided to give her the Genesa crystal with ruby inside. She looked at me, surprised, and said she had a dream in which I called her to come to me, telling her that I would give her a gift. I also found out she was suffering from fertility problems. Two months later she got pregnant, and today she has a small boy.
Another story is about a 4-year-old kid who intuitively selected the Genesa crystal at a shop. He was a very closed off and insecure kid, and after he started wearing the pendant, he started to communicate. I found out about this after the parents called me and asked me to make a new one for him because the first one fell down and was broken..
The third story is about a guy who called me sounding really sad. He told me that he bought my small Merkaba pendant at a shop and that the pendant fallen down and gotten lost on the same day. He said he felt for a long time that he didn’t have any luck, and he hoped that the pendant would change it. I also learned that the seller at the shop he bought it from had overcharged him. I invited him to my workshop. When he came to my workshop, his leg was covered with a cast. I took out three pendants and wanted to give them to him as a present, but he said he would only accept the small Merkaba as a present and wanted to pay for the other two. The second pendant he bought was the Gordian knot (Torus knot). Three months later the guy called me all excited and said his luck had changed on the same day. He said he decided to give his mate the second pendant. After she wore the pendant she sat for an hour without talking, and later that evening she broke up with him. After she left, his bad luck was gone, too, and he was very happy.
Q: Those stories are very interesting. I think that the combination of the sacred metals that you use in your jewelry and the spiritual energy of the geometric shapes must act as a balancing agent, helping to stabilize and correct people’s energy so it can flow again in the right direction. That last story about the man whose life improved after his girlfriend left him seems to show that the pendant helped her to get clear about what she really wanted to be doing with her life, which in turn helped the man. That’s neat! Of all of the wonderful forms that you work with in your jewelry design, is there any one sacred shape that you are most drawn to? Which ones have you found to be especially powerful?
A: My favorite model is the Mobius ring. The Mobius ring demonstrates the illusion of the self. If you can learn to understand the ideas behind the Mobius ring (and other sacred geometry shapes,) these can boost your spiritual abilities.
Q: You're based in Israel, a very special country. What it is like living in such an intense yet beautiful place? I would imagine that you are living on top of a powerful energy vortex. Here in the U.S. we have many sacred places like Mount Shasta in California and Sedona in Arizona. What are some of your favorite places for healing and prayer?
A: For me Israel is a mirror for all of humanity. I feel that Israel radiates out to the whole world and is meant to teach the world a lesson of patience. I use the day-to-day blessing of the peacefulness here in Israel as a lesson for balance and patience. Most of my jewelry models are made out of a desire to give people a different and more real point of view over their lives.
Q: People report feeling clearer and more energized after wearing your jewelry, so you are definitely inspiring people with your designs. That’s great. Tell us about your plans for 2006. Are you working on any new designs that you'd like to tell us about? What interesting things are you working on now?
A: Actually, I don’t have any special plans for 2006. I try to get away from planning. Every new model is created in the present moment from some understanding or thought that captured me. Like everybody, I expect surprises.
Q: It’s a good thing, to live in the moment. I often write about living on “shamanic time,” which is the timetable of God or Spirit. Living this way allows us to tap into marvelous energy and inspiration. It sounds like this is what you are doing with your work, allowing your art and your designs to flow with the energy of creation in a natural way. Thanks very much for agreeing to this interview, David. It’s been a pleasure introducing you and your work to my readers.
A: Thank you.
