Q: Catherine, thanks very much for taking the time to speak with us today. You are the author of an exciting new book, Angelic Abundance Treasure Maps: Discover the Wealth Within You. You also have a website, http://www.angelicabundance.com, where you provide many wonderful articles about communicating with the angels and learning how to incorporate their wisdom into your life. And you also offer angel readings for people over the phone. More info about this is available at your website. Before we get into discussing the angels and the exciting work that you are doing with them, can you tell us a little more about your background? You come from the arts world, correct? You've worked as an arts teacher in various school settings?

A: I began working the day after my high school graduation and put myself through college working in various positions in a bank. I graduated with a BS degree in Elementary Education. For a while, I flip-flopped back and forth between banking and teaching as I found both worlds offered fascinating career opportunities. So far, I have 7 years banking experience and 25 years teaching experience. In the end, teaching came to the forefront and continues to be my main focus.

Although I have self-contained classroom teaching experience in many grades that lasted several years, I've been an Art teacher for grades 1-8 for the past 10 years and thoroughly enjoy teaching children to look inside themselves to find the gifts and talents they possess and to assist them in expressing those gifts and talents.

I firmly believe that each and every person has a great storehouse of creativity within them. Once they give themselves permission to express that creativity in whatever way suits them they become free from habitual inhibitions and open to their vast inner wealth.

One book I find an invaluable aid is The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. When I read it, years ago, I did all the exercises and found it a great help to doing for myself that which I found so easy to do for my students. Other dynamic books are Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Drawing on the Artist Within by Betty Edwards. Each of them is loaded with marvelous exercises that can open a person to their creativity and help them to better hear their own inner voice.

I am a person who learns most easily by visual and kinesthetic means and from a young age on, I instinctively knew the arts were (and are) a means inward for me. Dance was always my favorite thing, followed by writing.

Although I'd learned to sew and knew how to do about 50 different kinds of crafts, our elementary school did not have an art teacher and I was never taught to draw, which was a huge missing piece of the puzzle, I think. At the time, people had the misconception that drawing was something people were born knowing and couldn't be taught. As a child and teenager I couldn't figure out why I'd not been blessed with the ability. I knew I was talented at many other aspects of art and simply could not figure out why I couldn't draw.

You see, my understanding of myself was that I was a completely average and perhaps stupid child because math was always difficult for me. To my parents, being "good" at math was paramount. Anything else I could do was considered trivial. They were blind to anything else and told me my innate gifts and talents were insignificant because they were related to art. I was told that since I had not been born a great artist, a DaVinci or a Michelangelo, that none of it counted at all. I was to focus on math and science and leave the arts alone except to have fun. To dabble in it was okay but to pursue it as a career would be, they thought, to ensure my certain starvation.

I learned to draw only after I'd been teaching for several years and finally, after working through the exercises in the previously mentioned books and getting my courage up, I took classes. Cameron and Edwards, authors of the aforementioned books, were instrumental in changing the field of art education for the better.

So, yes, Fine Arts has always been the main focus of my life and the thing I have found that truly makes life worth living, rescuing me from the mundane "blah" dullness many people seem to choose to live in. Fine Art connects a person at the heart level to the richness and fullness of life. Having it as a daily part of my life has truly facilitated opening to my own inner voice and the gifts housed there. It has greatly helped me to cherish my authentic self and has given me the courage to live life the way I know is right for me.

Q: As a child, you felt a strong connection to a loving Higher Power –whether you want to call this God, Goddess, or Great Spirit. I think so many children are wide open spiritually and are extremely psychic, before puberty and the pressures of adulthood shut them down. Can you tell us a little about your early experiences with the angels and with higher beings? Was it easy for you to feel a connection with the divine when you were a child? For how many years did this connection last? Also, I know that parents, teachers, and other authority figures can have a strong reaction when their children tell them that they are talking with God or communicating with higher teachers like Jesus or the angels. Did you feel shut down by parental figures or other adults in your life when you tried to discuss your spiritual experiences?

A:  When I was an infant, unable yet to talk, balls of light would appear as I lay in my crib and looked through my favorite blanket. I remember clearly one naptime talking with the spheres of light in my infant language and my mother standing in the bedroom doorway to check up on what I was up to. I distinctly recall telling her absolutely everything I had heard. Of course, I couldn't speak English yet so it was all baby blabber, not words. I remember, as clearly as if it were yesterday, my mother replying, "Oh, you're talking to the light," and smiling her marvelous smile.

When I was preschool aged and in the lower elementary grades, I recall a being of light who sat with my siblings as we colored with our crayons at a low square coffee table we had in the living room. I recall the comfortable loving feeling that always surrounded the being. Although it remained there when adults walked into the room, I was unable to see it as well when an adult filled with anger or fear was nearby.

I had a favorite toy monkey doll, a J. Fred Muggs, that I'd received as a Christmas gift when I was 2. I remember it talking to me. Obviously, it was my Angel talking to me through the doll as it always had kind, uplifting things to say. The doll was my favorite companion. One day, my mother threw it away, and I was inconsolable. My sister recalls that my mother had become fearful when I'd told her it talked to me. I must have put up quite a ruckus for a very long time as the doll was replaced weeks later. Eventually, however, that doll disappeared too. I remember being very sad as I did not know how to make the loving voice come back. I had lost my best friend.

I recall going to Mass on Sundays and listening to the sermons. I was confused about many things that were said and had discussions with my father about it. I finally noticed that, whenever the priest said something that was of God and actually true, I'd see the light surrounding him grow brighter. Whenever he'd condemn something or tout man-made church rules, the light would fade and often disappear. I used that as my guide to what to believe and didn't ever blindly accept everything the nuns taught in school. Obviously, I was seeing his aura, but didn't know it at the time.

Later, when I was about 10 years old, my siblings and I got our eyes checked for the first time. I didn't know what glasses were really for and figured it was to make the light I sometimes saw around people go away. Why I thought this I do not know. What I do recall is not being able to tell the optometrist which lens was better to see through because the light surrounding him remained no matter which lens he inserted. I told him that I couldn't tell because the light was still there. He asked which light that was and I said, because I really thought everybody could see it, "You know, that light that you see around people, that's around you right now." He gasped and I thought he wanted more explanation so I said, while wondering why he didn't know what I was talking about, "You know, that light everybody has around them, especially when they're in church." He suddenly jumped off his stool, turned on the main light in the examination room and said, "I don't know which light you're talking about, but I've corrected your eyes the best I can!" and he showed me the door.

I recall discovering that I was very successful in English class, especially in composition. In the 9th grade, I realized that, at certain times, I was given "help" while completing assignments. I'd be given ideas and words to write and was amazed at what came out of my pen. I didn't know how to access it at will though, so sometimes my writing sparkled, and sometimes it was simply good. I had great fun writing things and still awaken at 4am each day to write and have quiet time with the Angels.

Let me say right here and now that throughout my childhood, I always believed that I was only doing what everyone else did. I simply didn't know that others didn't have the same experiences. Adults generally had strange reactions on the rare times I'd mention what I knew or heard or could do.

By the time I reached my mid teen years I'd learned to keep my mouth shut when I was given information I knew came from the Angels. Gradually, I learned to ignore it almost completely, doing everything I could to be like everybody else and fit in.

Q: The wonderful thing is how you have been able to reawaken your spiritual connection and your ability to interact with the angels. Was there any one, strong event which prompted this reawakening, or did you gradually open up psychically again as an adult?

A:  I spent my early adult years trying to fit in and be like everyone else and live the sort of life they lived, and that meant shutting off my ability. I consciously chose to forget how to use it and copied other girls and women I knew who lived a "devil may care" sort of lifestyle, learning how to focus on trivial things and becoming part of the bar scene my coworkers indulged in. I'd been told I was odd or weird way too many times to feel secure showing the real me in the banking or teaching professions. It's difficult to live life so completely disconnected from one's inner self. As a result, I began drinking far too much and squelched most of my talents so no one would "find out" about me. Of course, I married someone who fit the "dumbed down" squelched version of me. He, although basically a good person, was a mean drunk. After about 16 years of marriage, I'd had enough and began to work through self-help books and also went to therapy to dig myself out of the dark pit my life had become. I had a young daughter and I wanted better for both her and me than to live with a sometimes raving drunk. I wanted to become healthy again and become whole again. After a few years of self growth, I gained the strength to move out, get a divorce and become myself again. It was an extremely difficult journey but one I am ecstatic to have made.

Q: I think we all face so many challenges in learning to reclaim our connection with the sacred. Did you have to get rid of any feelings of being unworthy, of feeling sinful and so forth, in order to connect with the angels again?

A:  No, I didn't really feel I'd been sinful. My credo has always been that God loves. I consider that to be the entire story and I've always focused on it. I consider any thing that organized religion says that demeans God and gives any suggestion that anything less than pure love flows from God to us to be ridiculous. I've always felt worthy when it comes to God. I had to realize that my search was not for the perfect religion that embodied God, it was a search just for God on a one to one basis. I had to admit to myself that I had a thirst for God. I'd shut up about that as well as I didn't want anything to do with being told I was too much of a commoner to be a saint, that I was a pretender or that the only life I could live like that would be to become a nun. Yuck! I never said I was a saint, only that I could hear God answer when I prayed. And that seemed to really bother people because they thought I was saying I was somehow better than them, and that hurt.

What I had to do was to quit running away from my gifts and talents. I had to become comfortable with the fact that I have always been able to do something many others wish they could do. I had to quit separating myself from the real me and learn how to become comfortable inside my own skin again. I had to learn to not allow the jealousy of others to knock me off track as it did when I was younger.

I say this so frankly now because, as a teacher, I watch girls shut down and learn to hide their giftedness quite often, and it always makes me sad to see it. Their classmates can say very mean things and ostracism can be very real for gifted young women. I often wonder just what I would have accomplished had I been encouraged to be the psychic, artistic person I really was instead of a hobby crafter who was supposed to follow church rules and not let anybody know she could talk with heaven. It was like living in a shadow of the life I was really made for. I recall asking God repeatedly why, if He'd made me the way He had, I couldn't live life fulfilling and perfecting the way I was made. Why was I always told to behave as somebody else would? Obviously, that question was the key. Of course, the meaning in anybody's life is to bring out and live through one's gifts and talents in order to fulfill the creator's desire/plan for that which He created. Yes, I knew how to be popular and went on lots of dates during high school, and most of my former classmates would be absolutely stunned to read this interview! I'd hidden myself so thoroughly behind the various roles I played that even I didn't know who I was.

Q:  I know that many people –especially Catholics, it seems –have shared with me that they find it hard to open up to the angels because they have a lot of negative programming that is blocking them. Have you encountered that in people you counsel? That they have to free themselves up from a lot of that negative conditioning which has told them that they can't have a direct experience with spiritual beings?

A:  Actually, no. Most people I counsel have somehow gotten through most of the negative programming. In my experience, the ones who were once Catholic and have grown past the strictures of it have found it easy to open to their Angels. They are probably, for whatever reason, not aware of my work or ready to hear what my Angels have to tell them until they've gotten to that point. Most tell me they already know how to hear and are seeking to broaden their abilities.

Q: In one of your wonderful essays at your site, you mention an experience you had one time with a golden shower of light, a bunch of sparkling energies which inspired you with their loving energy and beauty. I've found in my own life that my angels sometimes like to show themselves in the form of what I call “sparkies," little pinpoints of beautiful light that will suddenly pop up when I least expect them, offering a feeling of love and encouragement. Do you see sparkies regularly? Or do your angels manifest in other ways? Tell us how you like to communicate with your angels.

A:   In the experience you mention, the Angels did appear to me on a cool day in late Autumn as a column of sparkling, swirling, golden snow which was about 10 feet wide and 20 or so feet tall. I'd been meditating for quite some time, sitting on the beach in a county park. It was a spellbinding thing to experience and one I shall never forget.

I like to communicate with the Angels best in private while driving the car through the countryside. I use a clip on microphone and talk into the tape recorder. I do not usually try to see the Angel manifest in the physical at will. I fear becoming distracted and falling into a trance while driving, so I don't attempt it. I suppose I could see them if I tried while talking to them at some other time such as when I sit in bed in the morning and write or when I do an Angel reading for someone. One way that they communicate with me is by showing me pictures in my mind's eye, which I then use my discernment to interpret. I do see them quite easily and very clearly in my mind as they reveal themselves to me in the same manner.

Q:  In your book, you focus on helping people to open up those pathways of receiving good energy. You show readers how to welcome in energies of abundance on all levels, personally, financially, and spiritually. I love how you teach people how to make “treasure maps." Can you describe these treasure maps a little more, so that readers will understand what you do in the book?

A:  As we are all triune beings composed of body, mind and soul, I purposely present the information I bring in from the Angels so that it is easily applicable to every aspect of our beings.

As I wrote the book, I pictured the treasure maps I drew as a child which we followed when we played games in the nearby woods. I always loaded the maps with common landmarks which could be easily found but that always held a secret of some sort. It wasn't just a tree; it was the tree where the "lost boys" lived. It wasn't just a large rock, but the rock under which was a secret cave. In drawing the maps as a child, I brought the product of the imaginary into the physical realm.

As you know, the book is organized by seasons and then by the months and weeks. When I considered each month and nature's cyclical emphasis of each, I thought of using the technique of drawing the treasure map in order to reveal the things we'd already put into our lives and better understand why we'd put them there. Seeing what we've put into our daily lives reveals our open avenues as well as the blocks we've constructed that impede access to our inner selves.

So, in the book, we take the treasure map that already exists on the soul level, reveal it to ourselves using the activities found in the writing concerning the body level, and compare the treasure map we wish to walk with the map we have actually drawn for ourselves and walk each day. The drawing itself, of course, is figurative for most people, but the idea of the treasure map is easily understood. It is a great pictorial vehicle to use in revealing the impact of our choices.

I have structured the seminars so that they lead people through the book and teach them journaling techniques that reveal the maps they have figuratively drawn.

Q:  So treasure maps can help us to unblock areas of our life where we have found it hard to receive. Is that right?

A: Yes, that's correct. In realizing that which we have constructed for ourselves to experience on a daily basis, we are better able to understand the things we have consciously or unconsciously chosen to experience in life. If, as a result of our introspection, we find a block we have constructed that prohibits reception or realization of the ample abundance freely available to us, we can then choose to change it.

Here's an example. While writing the book, I began keeping an abundance journal. Surprisingly, I found I tend to discount and devalue the abundance that comes to me in forms that are not monetary. Once I realized it, I began writing them down. I found I also tended to ignore the abundance that often came in small amounts and added up -- the quarter found on the sidewalk, the $5.00 off coupon for the hardware store, the food that was provided at a luncheon at work. Things like that, I tended to take for granted and either wrote off as being too insignificant to notice or did not notice at all until I began to write them down. In acknowledging these seemingly small evidences of greater abundance, I've learned that I do truly receive far more often than I'd ever acknowledged in the past. I now actively look for these winks of support from the universe as they let me know that I do indeed stand in the flowing stream of abundance, showing me that things are always going toward the greater good.

Q:  I love the treasure map exercises. I think they give people powerful, practical ways to overcome obstacles and get their energy flowing again. No matter how successful we are in different aspects of our life, it seems that there is always room for improvement in other areas. For instance, someone might feel very fulfilled on a personal level, manifesting lots of great relationships, yet they don't have good financial flow. Or they might have tons of money but no quality companionship. As I read your book, I could really see that we can enter into working with our angels to really tackle each area that needs to shift.

A:  I agree. I think the treasure map exercises are great fun. They all begin with easy and obvious activities that quickly lead a person deeper within themselves. Then, when the activities designed to help a person explore the furthest inner regions of themselves are encountered, it's very easy for them to do as they have laid the groundwork. One progresses rather painlessly from the simple to the complex and holds their Angel's hand every step of the way.

Q:  Do you have a favorite angel experience that you'd like to share with readers or one that has happened to someone else you know? I always love a good angel story!

A:  I think the most fun Angel story I can relate is one my sister told me. She awoke in the middle of one night because her dog was at the back door inside the house barking and yelping in a very joyful manner. She arose, walked toward the kitchen and saw the light in the back hallway switch itself off. What we both got a kick out of was the fact that that the light hadn't been on when she retired and that whoever the visitor or Angel was, they had come to see the dog!

Another story I really like to tell, which is also true, is this one. As you know, for many years on the way to work I've talked to the Angels into a small tape recorder via a clip-on microphone. I'd transcribe the tapes later. So, one afternoon I was transcribing the tape which typically has only my voice and the sound of the car engine on it. I distinctly heard a person's voice saying "Hello." I almost fell off the chair! I've listened to it 100 times. I went back to the car with another tape and, while traveling on the same stretch of road I was on when the voice appeared, tried to recreate the voice. I figured I must have moved a switch on the dash board or something such as that and it only sounded like a voice but, try as I did, I could not even begin to create or duplicate the sound.

Q:  That is so cool! I’ve heard stories like yours from time to time, where audio equipment starts to behave with a will of its own as various spiritual presences decide to make themselves known! Tell us more about the angel readings that you do with people. What issues can someone explore with you in an angel reading? How does an angel reading work?

A:  Angel readings are so much fun. I love doing them as they give me a chance to be with the Angels once again and use my gifts to assist others. They are a conversation between you and the angels with me as the intermediary. Typically, people make a list of questions. Nothing is off limits, so you can feel free to ask anything you want or say anything you want at any time.

First, you contact me either via email catherine@angelicabundance.com or by phone (262) 377-3829 and we set up a time for your session. In preparation for your call, I first light an elegant rose-scented candle that has exceptionally pure fragrance. Q: Do you have any other thoughts or experiences on angelic communication that you'd like to share? Anything that readers should keep in mind as they start exploring their own connections with the angels?

A:  Yes, I do. Once people learn to hear their Angels, it's common for them to have days where they have trouble connecting, and then they begin to fear they have lost their ability. I want to tell them that even I have occasional days in which it is difficult to hear the angels. Typically, these are days on which I have filled myself with fear or anger or other draining emotions. After all, we are human and things seem to happen in life that we react to. That's all normal. At those times it is important to remember that the Angels are always here, although we may not be able to hear them. I find that once I calm myself down and refocus on love, the messages come through again, loud and clear.

I find that if I look at what I was occupied with when I perceived I could not hear, it is typically something I would have stayed away from had I been living from my authentic, heart centered self. Hearing one's Angel is a natural state, and we are all able to do it. As one grows closer and closer to living life in connection with their own higher nature, the connection becomes clearer and more frequent.

Another thing I'd like people to keep in mind is that communicating with the Angels is a skill, and skills are acquired and perfected through practice. I'd like to tell them to keep trying and not give up; that the ability, like a muscle will become stronger and easier to achieve through repeated use. Be certain to find a quiet spot and give it the attention it deserves.

Q:  I imagine that you have been gathering lots of new material as you continue to work with the angels. Any plans for a second book up ahead?

A:  My second book, which is well underway, is a response to the many questions I've received. It is a "How to Talk With Your Angels" type of book which will be an extension of that same section found on my website. Almost everyone who has had an Angel reading with me has requested more information and techniques to use to better communicate with their angels. I'll be certain to let you know when I have completed it!

Q:  I do hope you'll do a follow-up interview with us when it's time for your next book to be released. My readers will be eager to find out what you've been up to!
